Vaccination of animals with GE-deleted vaccine strain (Ge- marker vaccines) and differential detection of vaccinated versus infected animals with ELISA antibody targeting GE or gB protein has proven to be a useful tool in the program for the control and eradication of cattle herpes virus 1 (BoHV- 1) responsible for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), a major pathogen of cattle.
Diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and specificity (DSP) of the three GE commercial ELISA kit from IDEXX, IDVet and CIV-HIPRA compared to serum and milk matrix. Restricting the analysis to 198 people with the appropriate ELISA result in serum (91 naive, 37 vaccinated and infected 70) which DSe of GE estimated 0.97 to IDEXX kit, for CIV-HIPRA 0.93 and 0.53 for IDVet using samples of milk and DSP to 0.95 for IDEXX, 1.00 to IDVet and CIV-HIPRA.
GE application of ELISA for individual or bulk milk testing as an additional tool in the control program dedicated to the certification and control of vaccinated cattle were evaluated. Two of the three evaluated GE presented ELISA kit is great for a good deal of individual milk and serum samples.
Bulk milk tanks also proved to be suitable for the detection of BoHV-1 in the vaccinated flock prevalence as long as GE is superior to 10% as a false-negative result is often observed in lower GE herd prevalence. This limitation can be reduced to 8% of prevalence when the concentration step prior to application of bulk milk samples.
